Smithsonian's National Zoo Hosts World Oceans Day Event

In honor of World Oceans Day, the Smithsonian's National Zoo is hosting a free public event June 11, featuring ocean-themed crafts, games and other activities for families. Animal keepers at the Amazonia and American Trail exhibits will host talks, feedings and demonstrations highlighting a variety of marine species, including coral, seals and sea lions, among others.
Fun activities will give visitors an opportunity to learn more about the important conservation science that takes place at the Zoo and Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute (SCBI). Visitors can engage with staff and learn how SCBI scientists are studying coral reproduction and pioneering cryopreservation techniques that will help ensure the future of these important species.
On exhibit for the first time in the Washington, D.C. region, the Smithsonian's National Zoo presents "Washed Ashore: Art to Save the Sea" from May 27 through Sept. 5. Made completely of plastic debris collected from beaches, the colorful and dramatic sculptures of marine animals represent the more than 315 billion pounds of plastic in oceans today and underscore the need for wildlife conservation. Angela Pozzi, creator of "Washed Ashore: Art to Save the Sea," will speak to visitors about the project June 11 at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. at the Homer and Martha Gudelski elephant outpost.
