Elephant Cam at the Smithsonian's National Zoo Gets an Upgrade
Virtual visitors to the Smithsonian's National Zoo will now be able to see its herd of six Asian elephants up-close. The Zoo's high-definition elephant cam was previously stationary and only showed the elephants when they walked in view of the cameras in the Elephant Community Center. The upgraded multi-camera system is now operated by specially-trained Friends of the National Zoo (FONZ) volunteers, who will unobtrusively follow the elephants via the cams as the pachyderms spend time in the Elephant Community Center and outdoor yards. The webcam program will run daily with some variance in hours. When fully staffed, the goal of the elephant cam program is to operate between 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The cams will remain stationary overnight.
