About the Farm
Cooperativa Agraria Cafetalera La Florida (CAC La Florida) was founded in 1966 by 50 small-scale farmers in the remote, forested Chanchamayo region of Peru. They have been Bird Friendly certified since 2002 and focus on socio-economic development for members and environmental protection. Their various educational programs provide funding for new libraries, school gardens, and uniforms, as well as training programs, workshops on coffee production, and management sessions for community youth.
“La Florida is the second oldest cooperative in Peru. Its producers have always cultivated coffee under the shade of native trees, the same that house a great diversity of birds, wild animals, bees, and insects. To be Bird Friendly is a lifestyle for the members of CAC La Florida,” said Manager Jesús Damiano when asked why the Bird Friendly certification is important to the cooperative. As far as how he feels seeing birds and other wildlife on their farm, Damiano reflected, “To see the birds during sunsets returning to their nests in a group—a family— reflects the family reunion after a workday. Knowing there are many families within our farms —birds, animals, insects—gives us many lessons about how important family union is, sharing. It is definitely an indescribable feeling that they convey to us.”
